Korean American Society in Biotech and Pharmaceuticals (KASBP) announces “2016 KASBP Fall Symposium” to be held on October 21 (Friday) and 22 (Saturday), 2016 at Sheraton Edison Hotel Raritan Cencer, Edison, NJ. The symposium is sponsored by DAEWOONG Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. and GREEN CROSS CORP.

The symposium will focus on current trends in drug discovery and development. We also would like to uncover young scientists, recognizing their achievements in biotech and pharmaceutical research. The symposium will also provide a great opportunity for members to establish professional networks in order to share information and experiences in pursuit of excellence in R & D.

One of the highlights of the symposium will be the KASBP- DAEWOONG, KASBP-GREEN CROSS and KASBP-ST Pharm Fellowships for young scholars such as graduate students and post-docs who excel in research. Therefore, KASBP cordially invites all young scholars for submissions of an ABSTRACT and CV (Curriculum Vitae) for the fellowship awards in the 2016 KASBP Fall Symposium according to the following:

Invited Areas:

Medical science, biological & pharmaceutical science, organic chemistry, and/or areas related to drug discovery and development

Submission:

Prospective authors should submit an ABSTRACT (including author’s name, affiliation(s), postal address) and CV. Awardees should give a poster presentation (and a brief oral presentation) on Oct 22 (Saturday), 2016. Please indicate whether authors would like to give a poster presentation regardless of award. All authors giving a poster presentation would receive a partial financial support, though not selected as awardees.

안녕하십니까?

KASBP의 새로운 회계연도가 시작되는 7월이 되었습니다. KASBP의 내부 상황에 의한 council로 부터의 추천으로 제가 지난 임기에 이어서, 쉽지 않은 상황이지만 2017년 6월까지 13대 회장을 맡게 되었습니다. 또한 일년동안 새로운 임원진이 구성되었습니다. 그동안 수고해 주신 임원분들 감사의 말씀을 전합니다. 또한 새로 참여하신 모든 임원분들께 감사드리고, 이렇게 새롭게 출발하는 임원들에게 회원분들의 많은 격려를 부탁드립니다. 지금까지 잘 이어온 활동을 바탕으로 앞으로 한해 동안 KASBP는 계속 회원들 간의 네트워크를 더욱 강화하며, 학술 활동을 통하여 빠르게 변화하는 신약개발 분야에 필요한 정보를 나누며, 한국 제약 산업계 및 관련 정부 부서들과도 다양한 형태의 협력 관계의 증진과 후원사들의 발전을 위해서 최선의 노력을 하겠습니다. 앞으로 모든 회원분들의 적극적인 참여와 조언, 그리고 후원사들의 지속적인 지원과 도움을 부탁드립니다. 감사합니다.

KASBP website가 새단장을 하였습니다. 우선 job posting section을 새로 만들었습니다. 또한 News section에 앞으로 회원의 동정을 올리려고 합니다. 본인 또는 주위의 소식을 함께 나누기를 원하시는 분들은 로그인을 하시고 소식을 올려 주시기 바랍니다. KASBP 후원사들의 활발한 활동에 따른 소식도 함께 올릴 예정입니다. 

보다 나은 웹사이트로 다양한 소식을 담기 위해 아이디어가 있으시면 연락 부탁드립니다. 마지막으로 웹사이트를 꾸며주신 웹디렉터 정철근 박사님께 감사드립니다. 

지난 2015년 10월 15일 워싱턴 DC에서 있었던 보건복지부와 KHIDI 주관으로 열린 재미한인 보건 의료인 행사에서 KASBP를 소개하는 자리가 있었습니다. 한국의 정부기관, 기업, 그리고 미국 워싱턴 근처의 연구소, 기업들을 모시고, KASBP를 알리는 좋은 기회였습니다. 발표자는 KASBP 회장인 정재욱 박사 (Jae Uk Jeong, President of KASBP, 2015-2016) 였습니다. 

요즘 항암제 개발에 특히 많이 쓰이는것 같은데, 한국에서 이 분야에 전문가를 찾고 계십니다.  혹 아시는 분이 있으신가요? 

예를들어 Iressa (gefitinib)를 투여하는 경우 환자를  찾을때 therascreen® EGFR RGQ PCR Kit을 사용한다 합니다.  혹 이분야를 잘 아시는 분은 연락주십시오.

The therascreen® EGFR RGQ PCR Kit is a real-time PCR test for the qualitative detection of exon 19 deletions and exon 21 (L858R) substitution mutations of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene in DNA derived from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) tumor tissue. The test is intended to be used to select patients with NSCLC for whom GILOTRIF® (afatinib) or IRESSA® (gefitinib), EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), is indicated. Safety and efficacy of GILOTRIF (afatinib) and IRESSA (gefitinib) have not been established in the patients whose tumors have L861Q, G719X, S768I, exon 20 insertions, and T790M mutations, which are also detected by the therascreen EGFR RGQ PCR Kit.

이는 작년 총 27개의 신약이 승인받은 것을 고려할 때, 2014년도 제약 시장이 좀 더 활기를 띨 것으로 보입니다. 다만, 작년 상반기에는 30% 이상 차지했던 항암 신약이, 2014년 상반기에는 20% 미만으로 나타났습니다.

최근 발표된 EMA의 2014년 상반기동안 positive opinion을 받은 drug이 39개라고 합니다. 2012와 2013년과의 비교 자료도 함께 있는데요, orphan/non-orphan ratio가 20%에서 30%로 증가한 것을 볼 수 있습니다.
