안녕하세요, 재미한인 제약인협회 회원 (KASBP), 임원 및 후원사 여러분:

선배 회장님들의 뒤를 이어 2020년 7월부터 1년동안 17대 회장직을 수행하게 된 박수희입니다. 무더운 여름 날씨와 더불어 COVID-19로 인해 어려운 상황들 가운데에도 여러분과 여러분의 가족들이 항상 강건하시길 기원합니다.

무엇보다 앞서 전년도 회장으로 최선을 다해주신 서광순 (Stephan Suh) 박사님 및 여러 임원들의 수고에 깊이 감사드립니다. 여러분들의 노고와 희생으로 저희 재미한인 제약인협회가 질적으로 그리고 양적으로 한단계 더 성장할 수 있었습니다. 이제 여러분께서 물려주신 이 막중한 임무를 떨리는 마음으로 받아들입니다. 앞으로 많은 도움과 조언 부탁드립니다.

회원, 임원진, 그리고 후원사 여러분.  전 세계를 한창 휩쓸고 있는 COVID-19 는 우리가 살아왔던 어제와는 너무나 다른 일상을 가져왔고, 제약 전문가로 자부하는 우리들 조차도 언제 백신이나 치료제가 나와 이 어려운 시기를 종식시킬지 예측하기 어려운 오늘을 만들었습니다. 가장 큰 타격은 여러 형태의 모임을 통해 신약 개발에 대한 지식과 네트워킹을 나누었던 종래의 기반이 흔들리고 있다는 것입니다. 그렇다면 우리 KASBP는 어떻게 이 어려움을 슬기롭게 헤쳐나갈 수 있을까요? 어떻게 하면 우리가 지금까지 쌓아온 노력이 헛되지 않고 오히려 더욱 내실을 다지며 발전할 수 있을까요? 

영국의 역사가 아놀드 토인비가 정의했듯이 인류의 역사는 주어진 도전과 그 도전에 대한 응전으로 요약할 수 있습니다. 저희는 우리에게 주어진 도전, 즉 COVID-19로 인해 지금까지의 KASBP 모임 및 운영 방식이 불확실해지고 불투명해지는 이러한 상황에 대해서 여러분과 함께 답을 찾아가고자 합니다. 분명한 것은 우리는 어떤 일이 있어도 우리 본래의 사명, 즉 미국과 한국에서 활동하는 제약 전문가로서 서로의 지식과 생각을 교류하고 개인적인 친분을 다질 수 있는, 그래서 서로의 발전을 자극하고 도모할 수 있는 건강한 생태계를 가꾸어 나간다는 우리 협회의 사명을 잊지 않을 것 입니다. 그리하여 우리의 마음을 하나로 모아 계속 성장해 나갈 수 있도록 최선을 다 할 것을 여러분 앞에서 다짐해 봅니다.  현재 저와 임원들은 새로운 임기에 있을 온라인 가을 심포지움 행사와 다양한 활동을 계획하고 있는 중 입니다. 여기에 관해 자세한 계획이 정해지는 대로 여러분들께 소식을 전하도록 하겠습니다.

프랑스의 소설가 알렉상드르 뒤마의 소설 ‘삼총사 (Three Musketeers)’에 보면 주인공들이 외치는 구호가 있지요. ‘하나는 모두를 위해, 모두는 하나를 위해’ (One for All, All for One). 이 구호를 여러분과 같이 마음속으로 외치면서 이만 저의 취임 인사를 마치고자 합니다.  KASBP는 여러분을 위해, 여러분의 성장을 위해 존재합니다. 그리고 재미한인 제약인협회는 여러분의 참여와 헌신 위에 세워졌습니다. 지금까지 KASBP를 사랑해 주시고 후원해 주시고 응원해 주셔서 감사합니다. 앞으로도 꾸준한 관심과 참여를 부탁드립니다.

Dear members, officers, and sponsors of Korean-American Society in Biotech and Pharmaceuticals (KASBP):

Greetings from Soo-Hee Park, the 17^th president of KASBP for a year since July 1, 2020. I wish you and your family are staying strong and safe despite the hot summer weather and the challenges of COVID-19.

Above all, I would like to thank the former executive team, including Dr. Stephan Suh and the executive officers for their service last year. Thanks to your hard work and sacrifice, KASBP has grown one step higher, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Now, expecting your continuing support and advice, I am excited to take on the great mission that you handed over.

My fellow KASBP members, officers, and sponsors. The COVID-19 pandemic is now sweeping across the world and it has brought us a very different day compared to the one we used to live before. It is truly hard to predict when vaccines and treatments will come out and calm down this turmoil. Furthermore, probably the biggest infliction is that our existing foundation for knowledge sharing and networking of new drug development through various forms of meetings is being seriously undermined. So how does KASBP get through these difficulties wisely? How do we ensure that our endeavors so far are not wasted?

As the British historian Arnold Toynbee defined, the human history can be thought in terms of given challenges and our responses to them. I would like to address together with you the challenge that we are currently facing, COVID-19, which makes it extremely uncertain to run conventional KASBP meetings and operations. What I can promise is that we will abide by our very original mission, which is to cultivate a healthy ecosystem where we can exchange our knowledge and thoughts with pharmaceutical experts working in the U.S. and Korea, and build strong relationships among members. By doing so, we can continue to help each other and grow in our respective professional fields together. The new administration team including the executive officers and myself are planning Virtual Fall Symposium and other activities for the new term. The details of symposium will follow.

In the novel "Three Musketeers" by French novelist Alexandre Dumas, there's a famous chant from the main characters. 'One for All, All for One.' I would like to end my inaugural address by shouting this with you in our minds. Please remember. KASBP exists for you, for your own growth. Likewise, KASBP was and still is founded upon your participation and dedication. Thank you for loving and supporting KASBP until now. We ask for your continued interest and participation in the future as well.

미국과 전세계에 위협 되고 있는 COVID19 Pandemic으로 인해 참가자의 안전과 성공적인 심포지엄을 개최하는데 많은 어려움이 있을것으로 판단되어 KASBP 준비위원들은 금번 봄 심포지엄은 취소하기로 결정을 했습니다. 따라서 이번 6월 5-6일 양일간 워싱턴지역에서 개최되기로 했던 2020년 KASBP 봄 심포지엄은 열리지 않으며 대신 2020년 가을 심포지엄을 같은 테마 (New Therapeutic Modalities for Challenging targets)같은 지역(워싱턴 DC)에서 갖기로 하였습니다. 정확한 날짜는 추후에 공고되겠으며 10월중에서 11월초사이가 될것으로 예상하고 있습니다.

KASBP 임원진과 심포지엄 준비위원을 대신하여 여러분들의 관심과 지원에 감사드리며 오는 가을에 꼭 만나뵙기를 기대합니다. 가내에 늘 평안과 건강이 함께 하시길 기원합니다.    

After the careful consideration, the KASBP symposium organizing committee decided to cancel the KASBP 2020 Spring Symposium originally scheduled for June 5 – 6th, 2020 at Washington D.C. due to the ongoing COVID19 (coronavirus) pandemic situation in the United States. It was also decided that the KASBP 2020 Fall Symposium will inherit the theme (New Therapeutic Modalities for Challenging Targets) and the venue (Washington D.C.) originally crafted for the Spring symposium. The date and the detailed venue for the fall symposium will be announced in the next few months.

On behalf of the organizing committee, we'd like to thank you for your interest and ongoing support for KASBP. We look forward to seeing you at the upcoming event. Hope you and your families stay safe and well.

재미한인제약인협회(KASBP)에서 이번 2020년 봄 심포지엄에서 발표하실 펠로쉽 어워드 대상자를 모집합니다. 이번 봄 심포지엄은 워싱턴 DC지역인 College Park Marriott Hotel (3501 University Blvd E. Hyattsville, MD 20783)에서 6월 5일부터 6일까지 개최될 예정입니다. 생명과학 계통으로 연구하시는 젊은 연구자, 대학원생, 박사후연수원들의 많은 참여 바랍니다.

분 야: 의과학, 생물 및 의약학, 유기화학, 의약화학, 신약발굴 및 개발

신청요건:

1. 모든 신청자들은 반드시 KASBP 봄 심포지엄에 등록을 하셔야 합니다.

2. 모든 수상자들은 5분간 구두 발표 및 포스터 발표를 하셔야 합니다. (6월 5일 토요일).

3. 수상과 관계없이 모든 응시자들의 포스터 발표를 독려합니다.모든 포스터 발표자들에게는 소정의 금액이 지원됩니다. 초록과 CV를 심사 담당자에게 이메일로 보내주시기 바랍니다.

The Korean American Society in Biotech and Pharmaceuticals (KASBP) is cordially inviting you to apply for fellowship awards in the 2020 KASBP Spring Symposium to be held at College Park Marriott Hotel, 3501 University Blvd E. Hyattsville, MD 20783 from June 5 (Fri) ~ June 6 (Sat), 2020.  As an honored tradition, we award fellowships to young scholars, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows with a proven record of stellar contributions to the biomedical research.

Once selected, you will have an opportunity to attend the symposium which has been an excellent venue for emerging scientists to connect with a large professional Korean-American scientist network. During the symposium, you will also be exposed to cutting-edge sciences in drug discovery and development in industry.

Invited Area:

Medical sciences, Biological & Pharmaceutical sciences, Organic/Medicinal chemistry, and/or areas related to drug discovery and development

Submission Requirements:

1.       All applicants must be registered to the KASBP Spring Symposium before applying.

2.      All awardees are required to give a 5-min oral talk and poster presentation onJune 6(Sat), 2020.

3.      All applicants are encouraged to present posters, regardless of award. All poster presenters will receive a partial financial support. Please e-mail your Abstract and CV to committee chairs.

안녕하세요. 2020년 KASBP 봄 심포지엄을 6월 5-6일 양일간 워싱턴 DC지역 KSEA 지부들과 공동으로 개최하게 되었습니다. 금번 심포지엄은 New Therapeutic Modalities for the Challenging Targets 라는 주제로 열립니다. 이번 심포지엄을 통해 신약개발에 대한 지식을 넓힐 뿐 아니라 FDA, NIH 등과 같은 곳에 계시는 전문가들과 네트워킹할 수 있는 기회가 되길 기대합니다.

We are excited to announce the KASBP 2020 Spring Joint Symposium with the local KSEA chapters, which will be held on June 5^th – 6^th, 2020 at the College Park Marriott Hotel & Conference Center near Washington DC. The symposium will focus on the New Therapeutic Modalities for the Challenging Targets. This is going to be a fantastic opportunity for us not only to expand, strengthen our knowledge in drug discovery but also connect with professionals from local institutes, companies and government agencies such as FDA and NIH.  Please don’t forget to mark on your calendar and SAVE the DATE!
