KASBP (Korean American Society in Biotech and Pharmaceuticals) is a non-profit organization founded in May 2001 and the current members include Korean-American professionals working throughout the US, mostly in Biotech or Pharmaceutical field.  There are about 820 KASBP members currently registered.  The member profile includes not only professionals working in 100 pharmaceutical industries (BMS, Novartis, GSK, Merck, Sanofi, J&J, Pfizer, etc.) but also 60 academics in universities as faculties, researchers, post-docs, or graduate students; government employees in FDA, NIH, or other local and federal government organizations; and employees in Korean corporation or sponsoring companies even in Korea.  KASBP’s activities are held mainly in or around New Jersey, the Capital State of US Pharmaceutical industry.  In addition, four local chapters are established recently, in Philadelphia, Boston, Connecticut and Washington DC.

KASBP’s goal is to promote networking, collaboration and information exchange among members in the life science related fields.  For this matter, KASBP organizes and hosts various activities to assist networking among its members.  KASBP also aims to contribute to the growth of drug discovery, development and other pharmaceutical technology in Korean and US companies.  Especially, through a collaboration and information exchange with Korean Biotech companies, pharmaceutical companies and government funded research centers, KASBP has been helping new drug discovery, technology transfer, drug development and commercialization by Korean companies in Korea and US.  One important goal of KASBP is to identify and nurture young Korean researchers to grow up to become future leaders for Korean Biotech and Pharmaceutical industries. KASBP holds two symposiums every year, one in spring and one in fall, focusing on the new issues and trends in drug discovery and development.  During the symposium, KASBP also holds a panel discussion, with invited experts from all over the US working in various stages in drug discovery and development, to share updated information and their experience. Moreover, various collaborations in recent years with Korean pharmaceutical companies and research institutes promoted high level information exchange, providing assistance for drug discovery research and development in Korean companies. In addition to the above-mentioned technical activities, KASBP actively involved providing employment information for job seekers and employers. Furthermore, KASBP partners with other Korean-American Organizations hosting The National Math Competition in conjunction with KSEA/NJ chapter.  KASBP also organize several family and social activities for its members, such as bowling, golf, picnic, end-of-year, or new-year parties.

Since 2001, those who served as presidents are as follows: 1st – James J PAI, Ph.D. (Shering-Plough); 2nd – Young Whan PARK, Ph.D. (Merck); 3rd – Young Choon MOON, Ph.D. (PTC Therapeutics); 4th – Hong Yong KIM, Ph.D. (Novartis); 5th – Hak Myung LEE, Ph.D. (Medarex); 6th – Young Choon MOON, Ph.D. (PTC Therapeutics); 7th - Sung Taek LIM, Ph.D. (Sanofi-Aventis); 8, 9th - Yong-Hae HAN, Ph.D. (Bristol-Myers Squibb); 10th - Jae-Hun KIM, Ph.D. (Merck); 11th - Youngsun KIM, Ph.D. (VaxInnate).  At the current year, Jae Uk JEONG, Ph.D. (GSK), is serving as the 12th president leading KASBP with 25 directors and staffs. 

KASBP(Korean American Society in Biotech and Pharmaceuticals, 재미한인 제약인협회)는 2001년 5월에 설립된 비영리 단체로 미국 전역의 바이오기업 및 제약기업 종사 한인 과학인들이 참여하고 있다.  KASBP에는 100여개 제약기업(BMS, Novartis, GSK, Merck, Sanofi, J&J, Pfizer, 등)의 종사자들과 60여개의 아카데미아에 소속된 교수, 연구원 및 대학원생 등 학계 관계자들과 미국 FDA, 국립보건원(NIH) 등 정부기관 근무자들 등 약 820명의 등록 회원들이 참여하고 있다 (2015년 1월말 현재).  KASBP는 미국 제약산업의 중심지인 뉴저지를 중심으로 활동하고 있으며, 필라델피아, 보스턴, 커네티컷과 워싱턴 DC에 각각 지부를 두고 있다.

KASBP는 한미 제약산업의 성장과 발전을 위해 신약개발을 포함하는 생명과학 분야의 주요 이슈에 대한 학술정보 교류와 협력모색을 추구하고 있으며, 회원간의 네트워크를 강화하기 위한 다양한 활동을 벌이고 있다.  특히 한국의 바이오테크, 제약회사 및 정부출연 연구기관들과 긴밀한 협력을 통해 상호 관심사를 공유하면서 한국의 신약연구개발과 개발기술의 상업화가 활성화될 수 있도록 지원하고 있다.  이와 더불어 잠재력 있는 젊은 한인 연구자들을 발굴하여 한국 생명과학과 제약산업의 미래를 만들어 갈 전문가들로 육성하는 것도 주요한 임무의 하나로 설정하고 있다. 

KASBP는 매년 봄과 가을에 각각 정기 심포지엄을 개최하여 신약개발 분야의 새로운 이슈들과 트렌드를 집중적으로 조망하고 있으며, 이를 위해 미국 곳곳에서 활동하고 있는 관련 전문가들로 구성된 토론회를 개최하여 새로운 정보들을 공유하고 있다.  특히 최근에는 신약개발 활동을 강화하고 있는 국내 제약회사 및 연구소들과 다양한 형태의 협력과 협업을 통해 수준 높은 정보를 교류하면서 한국내의 신약 연구활동을 지원하는 활동을 활발히 펼쳐나가고 있다.  학술 활동 이외에도, 회원들의 구인 및 구직을 적극적으로 후원하고, 재미과학기술자자협회 뉴저지 지부 (KSEA-NJ)와 함께 청소년들을 대상으로 하는 수학경시대회를 개최하고 있으며, 회원들간의 친목을 도모하기 위해 볼링대회, 골프대회, 야유회, 송년회, 신년회 등의 친목 모임도 정기적으로 개최하고 있다. 

2001년도부터 제1대 회장 배진건 박사 (Shering-Plough, 현 한독약품)을 시작으로, 박영환 박사 (2대; Merck, 현 국립암센터), 문영춘 박사 (3, 6대; PTC Therapeutics), 김홍용 박사 (4대; Novartis), 이학명 박사 (5대; Medarex, 현 Shire), 임성택 박사 (7대; Sanofi-Aventis) 한용해 박사 (8, 9대; Bristol-Myers Squibb, 현 엔지켐생명화학), 김재훈 박사 (10대; Merck, 현 IFF), 김영선 박사 (VaxInnate) 전임 회장들이 재임한 바 있으며 현재는 제12대 정재욱 회장 (GSK)을 구심으로 25명의 임원들이 활동하고 있다.  KASBP는 오랜 기간의 꾸준한 활동을 인정받아 대한민국 정부로부터 지난 2011년 3월 미국 뉴욕에서 열린 <한국의료현대화 50주년 기념행사>에서 진수희 보건복지부 장관으로부터 공로상을 받은 바 있다.
